Staffing 2016 - Staffing in Room 4
This week received communication from Nathanja Gingerich advising that their plans have gone awry.  Nathanja and her husband have encountered some challenges with her husband’s health and the visa process and they have decided that coming to NZ poses too greater risk for them as a family. They are desperately disappointed.

While we were also looking forward to Nathanja’s arrival, we were also dreading saying farewell to Sheree Landrebe-Potter who was covering for Nathanja. I am delighted to announce that Sheree has accepted the position for the rest of 2016.

Behaviour and Attitude Reports
At DNI we believe that regular communication with parents and children is vitally important in ensuring that expectations are shared and students are doing well.

The fortnightly attitude and behaviour report is designed to encourage and communicate progress around the key competencies: self management, relating to others and participating and contributing.

We expect high standards for students in these areas because they are pivotal in developing and maintaining a positive learning environment and school culture:

The first report will home home on Monday via email, and then fortnightly on a Friday thereafter.

Please use this report to promote a dialogue between you and your child, and between home and school.

Headlice
Headlice is doing the rounds again and so it seems timely to let you know about our procedure around Contagious Infection and Headlice.

Aim: We aim to limit the spread of contagious infection and headlice at DNI. Headlice is expensive and time-consuming to treat. Limiting the spread of contagious infection protects staff and prevents parents needing to take time off work.

Procedure: Children should not attend school if they have had vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hrs, un-treated headlice or contagious infections as listed on the Ministry of Health website (link in the Student/Parent handbook).

If live lice are observed in a child’s hair parents will be contacted and arrangements made to collect them and treat or re-treat.

Children’s mana must be protected and staff are expected to be discreet.

When we have had an outbreak of an contagious infection we will notify families via the newsletter

The message should be spread through the newsletter and staff communication that no-one is immune from lice, to limit families being offended. We aim to please our community by trying to protect families from on-going re-infestation.

Where families are struggling to deal with or pay for lice treatment contact with The Public Health Service (ph 474 1700) should be advised.

AIMS (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) Games: In some years we have sent teams to the AIMS Games in Tauranga in September. This is a costly and time consuming exercise, but students have also really enjoyed it too. We are happy to support teams attending, but we need the fundraising and financial management to be parent lead. We are keen to hold a meeting to discuss the possibilities.

Sports Interchange: Traditionally we’ve held an interchange with Shirley Intermediate in Christchurch. Again, there are pros and cons with this. Some children have a great experience being billeted - others not so much! Christchurch requires two full days of travel. We are considering the possibility of a more local interchange - perhaps Cromwell College?

Agenda: Should we go to one or both?  Fundraising?  How many teams can we take? Form a committee?  When: Tuesday 15 March  Where: Room 3  Time: 5pm

Look forward to seeing you all here,  Heidi and Addie

Maori Hill Junior Football 2016
Maori Hill JFC, Dunedin’s largest junior football club, is now taking player registrations at all grades for the 2016 football season. We are a family-focused club in which a large number of DNI children play. We offer all-girls as well as boys and mixed boy/girl teams, and run an in-house Little Kicks programme for 4-5 year olds.

Where a player is new to the club and/or football we endeavour to place him or her in a team appropriate to their skills, with friends from school. While the best of our teams are competition winners at their respective grades, our primary focus is on player development.

To obtain a registration form or simply find out more, email us at Maorihilljfc@gmail.com or telephone club president Phil Tait on 464 0747 (evenings). Registrations for Maori Hill JFC close on Friday 4 March although there may still be some places available in various grades depending on player numbers.
