  • BOT Meeting,  Tuesday 4 July - POSTPONED
  • DNI Science Fair open to view, Wednesday 5 July 3-5pm in the DNI hall
  • Mufti Day, Friday 7 July
  • Last day Term 2 - Friday 7 July
  • First day Term 3 - Monday 24 July

DNI Science Fair
The DNI hall is open this Wednesday 3pm-5pm for parents and caregivers to come along and look at the wonderful work DNI students have been doing for their science fair projects. With the construction at the front of the school, you will need to walk around the outside to access the hall.

Mufti Day - this Friday!
We're having a mufti day on Friday to raise money to buy board games for our classes to use in Term 3 with the cold, wet lunchtimes ahead.  Gold coin donation please.  The funds raised in each class will be used by that class and the BOT will double the amount.

Three Way Conferences
In weeks two and three of Term 3 we’ll be conducting meetings to discuss progress to date. We do not issue mid year written reports as there is a huge amount of time involved in this and we find that having a face to face meeting time is much more beneficial in terms of communicating effectively. A booking link will be made available soon. If it’s really hard to get to school we are also happy to have telephone meetings. We aim to speak to parents/caregivers of every student over the fortnight.

Open Night
Open Night is coming up next term - Thursday July 27. Notices will come home this week for children who have been invited to assist. School will close at 2pm on this day to allow preparations for the evening.

Office Hours during the school holidays
Over the school holidays the DNI office will be open the following hours:
Week 1 -  Monday 10 and Wednesday 12 July, 10am - 3pm
Week 2 -  Monday 17 and Wednesday 19 July, 10am - 3pm

Self harm
We are aware that a number of whānau across Dunedin are struggling with self harming behaviours such as cutting. We are certainly not expert in this area, but we are trying to develop a procedure that helps staff to respond to concerns and provides concerned parents with avenues for support. Matt and I have spent the last month discussing our concerns with parents, the Ministry of Education, Child and Family Mental Health Services, Chat Bus and some of the high schools. We are also trying to organise a Parenting Support Course in Term 3. More details around this will be available soon.

ODT Extra Spelling Quiz
It never ceases to amaze me how high the scoring is for the ODT Extra Spelling Quiz! On 96/100 one might expect us to have placed in the top three! However have a look at the results below (I’ve included teams that go over 92% correct). DNI 3 was Will Orchiston, Max Cunninghame and Nico Alvarez-Rey Virag while DNI 5 were Jayden Jesudhass, Felix Telfer and Caitlin Hewson. Great stuff kids!

Student Achievements!
Congratulations to the DNI A Chess Team (Jake Owen, Ethan Lambeth, Nikau Edmond-Smaill and Lucas Wilde) who placed 3rd in the Otago/Southland Interschool Teams Chess Championship.  With this awesome effort, the boys have now qualified for the South Island finals in Ashburton in September!

The Year 7 Otago Netball Representative Trials were held last week and Zara Geddes has been selected in the team, along with Ellamay Taikato as a non-travelling reserve.  This is a great result for DNI so well done girls.

Naima Woodrow has also been very successful recently. In May at the Otago Aerobics national qualifier Naima placed 1st individual Level 4 (scoring just under the senior international competitors which is a huge achievement for anyone let alone an  for an 11-year-old) as well as 4th in pairs Level 4.

In June at the Invercargill sanctioned Aerobics competition she then place 2nd individual
and 1st pairs. Then over the weekend at the Otago Aerobics Championships she again place 1st individual and 4th pairs!  Through these results Naima has now qualified and been selected to represent Otago at GymSports NZ nationals in October.
We've also got DNI talent on show over the holidays. Dan Hayman, Laura Cowles and her two brothers, Matthew and Daniel (ex-DNI) are all on stage in the Otago Scout Gang Show.   Check it out at http://www.otagogangshow.com/
