Electives Payments
Our first electives for the year are next week, Monday 6 - Thursday 9 August.  Ski camp, Naseby and Horse Riding must be paid before Monday.

Mid Year Learning Discussions
Mid year learning discussions begin this week. We send home a written report at the start and end of the year but we find that meeting with caregivers and students to discuss learning progress is much more valuable mid year.

We would really like to see or speak to all caregivers and parents over the next few weeks. Please book a 20 minute slot. Your child should attend or be able to contribute on the phone so please be careful not to book meetings during electives week if your child will be away this week (August 6-9).

We will share your child's assessment folder with you at the interview, this is an on-line folder that you'll be able to access from home any time you choose to. It is regularly updated as new assessment takes place.

Interviews can be booked after 5pm Friday 27 July, at https://parentinterviews.co.nz using the code below, or contact the Office on Ph: 473 9027 if you don't have internet access and they'll be able to assist.

Student Successes!

We love to celebrate the current achievements of our talented students whether it be in sports, music, art etc. But if it's outside of school, we often don't hear about it or don't know the full details.

Please help us, by emailing Rebecca Steersbecks@dni.school.nz and also office@dni.school.nz  This will ensure the information gets through to the newsletter and Rebecca who co-ordinates the Achievers Wall that is completed at the end of each year.

Epro8
We've had a number of teams competing in the inagural Epro8 Challenge. Teams placed fourth in the Wednesday and Thursday competitions, and on Friday's session DNI Wolves were first equal and DNI Hunters third!! These 2 teams are through to the Grand Final which is being held at DNI. Great effort!

Board of Trustees By-Election Result
At the close of nominations, as the number of valid nominations was fewer than the number of vacancies required to be filled, I hereby declare the following duly elected:

Liz Riggir

Signed,
Helen Close - Returning Officer

Kia ora,
I am firstly a parent of two super fun, intriguing children. One is currently at DNI with the other arriving next year. I have been involved in education for twenty years as a Primary School Teacher, and am currently Team Teaching a fabulous group of Year 2 learners at Wakari School. For the last ten years I have also been a business partner with my husband, Nick, operating a Sandwich Shop in central Dunedin. Experience has taught me that relationships are key in the success of any operation.
Having been an member of the Opoho Playcentre, then the Opoho School communities I am now looking forward to the opportunity to become part of the Dunedin North Intermediate BOT and supporting the professional, caring team I have come to admire.

   Ngā mihi nui, Liz Riggir.

School Closure Notice - Wednesday 15 August
As you will be aware there is impending strike/industrial action scheduled for Wednesday 15 August for 3 hours; from 1.30 to 4pm. In the next few days teachers are voting as to whether this might be extended to a full day.

The Board of Trustees will close the school for health and safety reasons from 1.30 to 4pm on that day as there will be no teaching or leadership staff on site. We ask that children be collected from school at 12.30pm and you make alternative arrangements for child care for that time.  This instance is different to previous stopwork meetings, because all teaching staff are required to be off site, therefore there will be no provision for supervision of children and all children will need to be collected.

If the strike is extended to a full day then updated information will be disseminated as soon as it comes to hand.

We appreciate that this is most inconvenient. Please be assured that the decision to take this action has not been made lightly. Our teachers feel strongly that action is necessary to address the seriously concerning shortage of teachers. Teacher training enrolments have dropped 40% between 2010 and 2016. The following issues need to be addressed if we are to be able to recruit and retain enough of teachers to competently staff our schools:

* Adequate resourcing and support for students with special needs or learning challenges
* Staffing entitlements that allow enough time to plan and teach quality programmes
* Salary offers that ensure teaching is an attractive and valued profession

The Board of Trustees supports our teachers’ views in relation to this matter, and supports the taking of industrial action. It is regrettable that such steps are required, given the disruption and inconvenience it will cause to our school community.

"The Sexuality Road"
As many of you will be aware one of the themes included in our Health and PE focus in Term three is the pubertal change unit ‘The Sexuality Road’. This unit is created by family planning to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop positive attitudes towards sexuality and to enhance their interpersonal relationships now and in the future.

Sexuality education is a valuable part of the NZ Curriculum and it is a requirement that it is taught as part of the Health and Physical Education learning area from Years 1-10. You are welcome to contact your child’s teacher to discuss the programme or to view any of the teaching materials used. Teachers will begin teaching the programme this week.

We look forward to working with the students through this important programme and hope that you take the opportunity to have many interesting discussions at home regarding the content your child will be taught in the coming weeks.
