Tena koutou,
It's hard to believe that it is nearly the end of term - the weeks seem to be flying by! We've done a superb job of collective fundraising in the last few weeks. We raised $305 last week for the Shave for a Cure Mufti and this week we've raised another $260 and we have a couple of boxes worth of cans for the victims of the Muslim attacks. Local arborist Peter Waymouth has agreed to work with us around developing a plan for the Tolerance Tree so we look forward to meeting with him in the coming weeks.

The bulbs have also arrived and will be available for collection from Monday afternoon and we have close to $1750 to put toward ICT resources so thank you to everyone who supported these fundraisers.

As I mentioned earlier in the year, intermediate is a time for children to experiment with burgeoning independence and self management. We often see rapid progress and this year is no exception. It is fantastic to see so many students trying new things and taking risks. It is vital that children understand that failure is an essential and often unavoidable aspect of the learning process. Albert Einstein summed this up nicely when he said "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new". On this note we are looking forward to the upcoming Marae stays, which for many will be a new experience and a reminder too that winter sports regos close tonight so please do take this opportunity to ensure that your child is registered for at least one winter sport!

By now I hope that everyone has had a chance to meet with their child's homeroom teacher to look over the start of year assessment report and discuss hopes and aspirations for the year. Please do get in touch if you've not been able to meet yet as we really value the input from home and we'd like to have seen (or spoken) to everyone by the end of term.

Kids' Lit Quiz 2019
On Monday 11 March DNI hosted the Otago heat of the international Kids’ Lit Quiz competition.  A fantastic event at which teams of 4 students ransack their knowledge of literature to win spot cash prizes and the opportunity to go on to a national final in Wellington and International final in Singapore. Parents and Staff  also showed off their literary knowledge to win  vouchers and cash prizes.

Twenty teams participated, three of which were from DNI.  The excitement was palpable as Columba claimed first place narrowly beating The Terrace School from Alexandra.  Tahuna 2 and DNI 1 (Grace, Ben R, Aisha and Libby, all from Rm 14) went head to head for third place with Tahuna winning the sudden death question).

North East Valley and Rudolf Steiner schools  were first time players.  North East Valley put in an impressive performance beating Opoho and multiple teams from Grant’s Braes and Macandrew Bay schools to win the year 5 and 6 section, they came 6th overall.

All teams thoroughly enjoyed the day and we look forward to welcoming them and newcomers to the Kids’ Lit Quiz 2020!

Rugby League 9's Tournament
On Friday 15 March, DNI was proudly represented at the Intermediate Rugby League 9's tournament by 17 courageous and determined players.  The photo's below show them after a great game against Haeata from Christchurch - we lost in the last second of the game but it sounds like the team had a blast!

Vaccination Register
With the current Measles outbreak in Christchurch we need to update our Vaccination Register - could you please ensure you have filled in the form at the link ASAP if you haven't already done so (we're still missing 100 students from the responses so far). It'll only take 2 minutes, promise!

Shave for a Cure
Thank you for the amazing support of the mufti day last Friday helping Libby from Rm 1 in her goal of raising $1000 for Shave for a Cure - we raised $305 on the day!  Check out the before and after photos below.
