Industrial Action - Wednesday May 29
The NZEI has advised all primary schools that due to the results of the vote last week by primary teachers and principals, all union members will be on strike on Wednesday May 29.

Because the vast majority of DNI teachers are union members and therefore required to strike, the DNI Board of Trustees has decided to close the school for the day.

We recognise that this will cause an inconvenience to some whanau. This is an unfortunate consequence of the ongoing pay dispute between New Zealand’s teachers and the Government, and the Board of Trustees is supportive of our teachers’ collective voice being heard on this issue.

A reminder that registrations for electives are closing at 5pm today  Click here for the link to register:   Winter Electives 2019

Whanau Hui - Tuesday May 28
Haere mai ki tō tātou kura, hei te 5.30pm, ki te hui whanau.

This year we have established a Māori Student Council, which is open to all of our Māori tamariki. The Māori Student Council will be taking the lead on whanau hui and the first for 2019 is scheduled for Tuesday May 28 at 5.30pm in the staffroom.

At the hui the ākonga will share with you the things we feel are going well and discuss with you the ideas we've had for improving things Māori at DNI.

Science Fair Boards
As you'll probably be aware, DNI students are currently working hard on their Science Fair projects.

The Science Fair boards have now arrived, in a choice of colours and are available for purchase from the school office for $10 - cash / eftpos / cheque accepted.  Please note these can't be charged to student accounts.

Lego League
First Lego League is a robotics competition held in Auckland in December. This competition involves children working in a small team to design and build a Lego Mindstorm robot to complete a specific challenge.

It is a great opportunity to gain some real-world experience as scientists, inventors, engineers and problem solvers. We're taking expressions of interest here: lego league

Strike 4 Climate -  Friday 24 May
Reminder - If your whanau supports your child being involved in the Strike 4 Climate then you are welcome to make arrangements for them to attend as you see fit (note: the Strike is open to everyone, not just school students).

We ask that you return the slip below by 3pm Wednesday May 22.  Please be aware that the school will not be providing any supervision so you need to be comfortable with the arrangements you make for your child.

Permission to attend the Strike:
My child ________________________ has permission to leave school on Friday May 24 to attend the Climate Change Strike in the Octagon.

They will be leaving  at ________(time)

I understand that students will not be supervised by DNI staff and so once they leave school, responsibility for them will be mine as their parent.

I also understand that Heidi will meet with all students attending on Thursday to discuss representing DNI with integrity at the event.

Board of Trustees Election - Nominations close Noon, Friday 24 May
A reminder that nominations are now open for our BOT election, to fill the 5 parent representative positions. We're changing to a Staggered election cycle so 3 of the positions are for 3 years, and 2 of the positions are for 18 months.

Information and nomination forms were posted to all eligible voters last week and extras are available from the school office.  Nominations close at noon on Friday 24 May.

To date with have 1 nomination for an 18 month position and 1 for a 3 year position.

From our current Board of Trustees Chair, Allie Cunninghame:
It has been my pleasure to serve as the chair of the Dunedin North Intermediate board of trustees over the past three years. I encourage you to consider standing for election to be part of the new board. Being on the board of trustees has offered me the opportunity to be more deeply involved in the life of the school, and to be a part of the decision-making team that sets out our community’s vision for how our children should be educated. I have gained a better understanding of education is delivered in Intermediate Schools. I have also had the opportunity to celebrate our successes such as the opening of our refurbished premises.
A school board of trustees should be representative of its community. All of you will have experience or expertise which will bring important perspectives to the work of the board. I particularly encourage Māori and Pasifika people to stand for election.
You do not need any special experience to be on a school board. The New Zealand School Trustees Association provides valuable support and advice to boards, and offers training sessions to trustees to ensure that you are comfortable with your governance powers and responsibilities. Board members (other than the Chair) are required to attend one meeting per month, and they may have additional meetings from time to time, but the time expectations recognises your family and work commitments come first.
I am excited by the potential for the forthcoming board of trustees, given the wonderful people in the DNI community who are eligible to be elected. I hope to see your names put forward in the coming week.
