Short term counselling opportunity at DNI

Earlier in the year, we applied to the Bendigo Valley Foundation for funds for some counselling hours. We have been successful in this application and have now found a suitable counsellor (which was no small feat given the shortage).

Alice Hawker settled on counselling as a career after being involved in youth work for a few years. Working one-on-one with young people as a mentor to help achieve their goals but also just to get alongside them has been something that has given her a sense of satisfaction and purpose. She completed her Bachelor of Counselling at the end of 2016 and have been based in the Otago region since then.

Previously she's been involved in schools in Christchurch; St Andrews College and Lincoln High School before starting a student support role at the University of Otago Language Centre and Foundation Year, where she has worked with people from all over the world offering pastoral care and support.

Long term, she hopes to one day start her own practice, specialising in animal assisted therapy and was working on farms overseas to learn how to train alpacas for this reason before the pandemic brought her home much earlier than anticipated this year.

Alice is currently unregistered, having been overseas, but will be professionally supervised and will submit her application this month.

We plan to operate her sessions in the same way that Chat Bus used to run. Students can book a session via a locked box at the office. Like Chat Bus, we consider it appropriate for students of intermediate age to be able to access someone to talk to without parental permission. Please let us know if you are have any concerns about this or would like to discuss it further.

Alice will start next week and we have funding to see us through to the end of 2020.
