Celebration Newsletter

Seems like there hasn't been much to celebrate this year, so rather than hiding within our normal newsletter we thought we'd do this instead. So where to start?!

Wrestling Champ
Over the school holidays Wade McClenaghan competed in the NZ Wrestling Nationals and placed 2nd in his age/weight group! Amazing result!

DNI Cross Country
Due to the covid restrictions our annual school cross country was run in syndicates, around the school, without any spectators. We'd like to acknowledge the top place getters and congratulate them for their fastest overall times. Surfing Star
A few weeks back, at Winter electives, Alexis Owen and I found ourselves in Queenstown A and E after a nasty snowboard accident. During our lengthy wait, we discussed the fact that this would likely knock him out of contention for the final of the South Island Surfing Series. He was understandably gutted.

I am so delighted to learn that, despite missing the last event, Alexis had a good enough lead on points that he has won the South Island Surfing series for U12 yr olds and placed 2nd in the U14 division as well.

So proud but I'm not surprised. This young man has both courage and perseverance to burn!

Table Tennis
Congratulations to Lucas MacLeod who was part of the successful U13 Otago Boys Table Tennis Team, winning their age category.

Otago Mathematic - Problem Solving Competition
Over 60 students at DNI have competed over the year in the Otago Problem Solving Competition.  Students sit five different tests with five questions.  We are proud to hear that Cambell Drake and Emerson Davies have scored over 20 which makes them eligible for the Final Challenge that they will sit next week.  Cambell has been awarded with a book voucher for being one of the top qualifiers.

Otago Primary and Intermediate Triathlon
This was delayed in March but finally went ahead on Thursday 15 October in Balclutha. A huge thank you to Louise and Sam for transporting and organising our five wonderful athletes. Results were:

Will Laws - 2nd, in Year 7 boys individual
Adam Mainvil-Baxter - 5th, Year 8 boys individual

William Thompson, Isaac Simons and Jai Kain - 5th, Year 8 boys team

These are amazing results and we are super proud of the boys!!

We've finally got the certificates back from Australia and we'd like to congratulate all the students who participated and in particular the following students for their outstanding results:

Geordie Stephenson - Distinction - ICAS Mathematics
Cambell Drake - Distinction - ICAS Mathematics; Digital Technologies; Science and Spelling Bee
Adam Kaloga - Distinction - ICAS Mathematics
Zakariya Rizwan - Distinction - ICAS Mathematics
Raymond Yang - Distinction - ICAS Mathematics and Digital Technologies
Kenzie Drake - Distinction - ICAS Digital Technologies
Ken Nguyen - Distinction - ICAS Digital Technologies
Lola Murray - Distinction - ICAS English
Micah Bradburn-Hay - Distinction - ICAS English and Spelling Bee
Dara Houlahan - Distinction - ICAS Spelling Bee

Cambell Drake - High Distinction - ICAS English!

To put these results in context, Distinction means in the top 10% of the results for all of NZ and Australia, and High Distinction is in the top 1% of results!!! Well done everyone.
And we were also delighted to see Aubrey (DNI 2018-19) take out the top mark in New Zealand for the ICAS Year 9 Mathematics exam!

Otago Swimming Inter-Club Competition
Last weekend we had two students competing for their swimming clubs at the Otago Inter-Club Competition held in Wanaka, Lily Harvard and Neo Salomonsson (swimming for Kiwi Asc).  As you can see from the photos below, they both had a very successful meet! Great effort.

DNI White Netball Team
Big congratulations to the DNI White netball team - Tessa Abey, Prachi Patel, Sarah Yuhoi, Huia Parker, Vai Anesone, Lucy Kahn, Charlotte Fleming, Sophie Campbell and Samara Stewart - who won their division! They were coached by Julie Yuhoi who let us know that she'd had management comment on the teams amazing conduct throughout the competition. Showing the DNI values!

Gymnastic Success
Safira McAnally has also been busy winning medals! At the DGA Olympic Gala in August, Safira won 3 x 1st Place (Beam, Floor and Bar), and 1 x 2nd Place (Vault) with a 1st Place overall.

Then at the DGA Perform Club Champs last weekend she received 1 x 1st Place (Beam) and 2 x 2nd Place (Bar, Floor), she was unable to compete in Vault due to a knee injury but still managed to take 3rd place overall. Well done Safira!

And finally - Year 9 Scholarships - Logan Park High School
We'd like to congratulate all our lovely ex DNI students who gained Year 9 Scholarships from LPHS at the end of Term 3 - very proud as ever.

Solomon Cloughley, Jake Hibbert, Hannah Barton, Caitlyn Smith, Libby Wilson and Grace Fagerlund!
