Navigating the Journey: Sexuality Education

Tēnā koutou katoa,

As many of you will be aware one of the themes included in our Health and PE focus in Term three is the pubertal change unit ‘Navigating the Journey: Sexuality Education’. This unit is created by family planning to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop positive attitudes towards sexuality and to enhance their interpersonal relationships now and in the future. It is NOT sex education - the focus is around understanding the changes puberty brings.

Sexuality education is a valuable part of the NZ Curriculum and it is a requirement that it is taught as part of the Health and Physical Education learning area from Years 1-10. You are welcome to contact your child’s teacher to discuss the programme or to view any of the teaching materials used.

The unit is available for your perusal here:

It is important to be aware that the issues presented in this unit are issues that our students are hearing, seeing, experiencing (no matter how much we might hope they are not yet) and this programme ensures that students get safe and reliable information. The last thing we want is for our students to use google or friends to answer their questions as this often nets ‘interesting’ information!

We look forward to working with the students through this important programme and hope that you take the opportunity to have many interesting discussions at home regarding the content your child will be taught in the coming weeks.

Yours sincerely,

DNI teaching staff
