Reminder - Swimming 2021      (as sent out 7 April)
School Swimming is an essential component of the Health and PE programme and starts in Week 1 of Term 2. Students will be attending nine swimming and water safety sessions at Moana Pool.

We have been tracking data since 2016 and have had similarly concerning statistics over this time. In 2019, only 59% of our school were swimming at an age appropriate level, however this percentage rises to 69% of year 8’s compared with 48% of year 7’s which suggests that the programme is really effective. With last year’s DNI swimming programme being cancelled due to lockdown, it is doubly important that we take the opportunity to improve the swimming abilities of our students.

Swimming is a compulsory aspect of the school programme and as such can not be a compulsory charge. This said, we could not run the programme without a whanau contribution. We have done our best to keep the cost as low as possible including applying for support from the Bendigo Valley Sport and Charity Foundation.  The total subsidised cost per child for the nine Moana Pool sessions and school swimming sports is $45pp and this is significantly less than a term of private swimming lessons.   This includes admission, lessons and transport to and from the pool.

The cost will therefore come up on the invoice as a donation and we ask that you contribute what you can to ensure that we can continue to offer a swimming programme.

Sessions are at different times/days for different classes. A timetable is included below:

  • Rooms 11, 13, 14, 16 - Mondays or Tuesdays in Term 2 from 11am - 12:30pm starting Tuesday 4 May (no lesson during the week of 10 - 14 May due to an event being held at the pool). Sessions will be on Mondays except for Tuesday 4 May and Tuesday 15 June.

  • Rooms  4, 6, 7 - Wednesdays in Term 2 from 9:30am - 11am starting Wed 5 May (no lesson during the week of 10 - 14 May due to an event being held at the pool)

  • Rooms 1, 3, 8, 10 -  Wednesdays in Term 2 from 11am - 12:30pm starting Wed 5 May (no lesson during the week of 10 - 14 May due to an event being held at the pool)

There will also be a school swimming sports day held on Friday 9 July from 9:30am - 12:30pm. More details on this event will follow in Term 2.

Students will need to bring their togs, towels and goggles (essential) to school on swimming days.

All students present at school are expected to participate in swimming. The only non-swimmers we can cater for are children in plaster/fibreglass casts or with medical certificates. If your child is simply unwell or unable to participate in swimming (the regular school programme on that day) then we ask that you organise care for them.

As per our EOTC policy we require at least one adult to every eight children (around water) and so we do require parent/grandparent/caregiver (...any available adult!) assistance. You do not need to get in the water, but rather watch swimmers in the wave pool and alert the life guards to any children in need of assistance. If you do have water safety experience however, please make this known as we may be able to use your skills.

You can contact your class teacher if you can help or you can book yourself in at this link: Swimming Help 2021 I will then be in touch with further details.

Please help us with our planning by completing the Swimming snapshot survey by Friday April 16  (End of Term 1). This can be accessed by clicking here Swimming Snapshot. Paper copies are available from the office on request.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Chris Marslin

Reminder - DNI Zone Consultation
You may be aware that DNI has been growing for the past few years. At 297 students we are the biggest we've been in 20 years and we are nearing capacity. The Ministry of Education has directed us to introduce a zone so that we reduce the chance of overcrowding.

Please find attached the plan, and the map, that we are wishing to consult around.

Feedback should be submitted via email, to and marked Submission DNI Zone 2021 in the subject line. All submissions will be collated and considered at our Board Meeting on May 25, 2021.

What's been happening?
Our students have been involved in a lot this term both in and out of school time, as you can see from the following!

Dunedin Primary and Intermediate Triathlon
Henry (Rm 16), Lily (Rm 8) along with Will, Luca and Jai (all Rm 10) represented DNI with mana at the Dunedin Primary and Intermediate Triathlon.

Will, Lily and Henry finished in the top six and went on to qualifiy for the Otago Primary and Intermediate triathlon.

Pipe Band
We have two current students Dustin and Daniel (Rm 8) plus a number of past students who are part of the John McGlashan Pipe Band.

If anyone is interested in learning the bagpipes, snare, tenor or bass drum, with the plan to join the John McGlashan Pipe Band, you can contact Louis Davis ( and he can put you into contact with some knowledgeable tutors. You don’t have to be a John McGlashan student to join the band, only a Dunedin school student. All school ages are welcome to join and are currently competing members.

Surfing Champs
Congratulations go to Alexis (Rm 11) who competed in the South Island Champs recently and placed 2nd in the U14's to a surfer from Mount Manganui!
